The products used on your lawn today are meant for lawns that are properly watered. We always recommend watering 3/4 of an inch the night before our treatments so that products are not applied to drought-stressed lawns.
An underwatered lawn will not allow lawn chemicals to work correctly. Applying herbicides to an underwatered lawn will not only harm the lawn but will also cause weeds to survive.
A lawn that is drought-stressed is more likely to be attacked by insects. Irrigation should be set according to the zone's rate of evaporation. Sunnier areas need more water than shaded areas. As it gets hotter, sandy soil will need more water due to a faster rate of evaporation. During the summer months, expect your water bill to increase a bit to keep the root zone from drought.
As the seasons change, you will need to adjust your irrigation due to temperature changes causing different rates of evaporation. Overwatering shaded areas is the main cause of thinning and weeds.
Check your irrigation weekly to make sure you don’t have breaks or clogs causing poor pressure or inadequate coverage. This is the best way to stay on top of your lawn care.
Never cut your lawn shorter than 3.5 inches, especially in the shade. The longer the blade of grass, the longer the root zone. The longer blade of grass absorbs more sunlight, which is food for the grass.
Always follow directions from the applicator, who is a state-trained professional in their field.
It is important to ensure sufficient watering for your lawn, especially with rising temperatures nearing summer. Inadequate watering can result in various issues such as increased insect activity, shallow roots, and unhealthy grass. Proper irrigation system maintenance, including regular checks for clogs, coverage, pressure, and zone output, is crucial. Failure to tailor watering schedules to individual zones based on factors like sun exposure can lead to uneven water distribution and dry patches.
Compliance with city water regulations is essential, as drought can strain resources and lead to lawn damage. For areas receiving ample sunlight, deep and frequent watering is advised, following guidelines to prevent overuse. In drought conditions, adjusting watering frequency and duration accordingly is necessary to maintain lawn health.
To determine optimal watering times, monitoring soil moisture levels and adjusting irrigation systems based on zone needs is recommended. Deep, infrequent watering should be encouraged for deep root growth and to prevent issues like weed infestation and grass death. Ensuring the efficiency of your irrigation system is paramount for achieving a vibrant lawn, and professional assistance is available for system setup and adjustment if needed.
So you think you’re watering long enough? Chances are you’re not!
The most important key to a good-looking lawn is proper watering. Without it, lawn chemicals do not work correctly and can cause turf damage. You must check your irrigation system weekly for clogged heads, uneven coverage, poor system pressure, and zone output.
All too often, companies set generic watering times without measuring zone output or considering the zone’s total amount of sun and shade evaporation rate. This leads to dry spots in your lawn, shaded areas with prolonged soil saturation, and areas that receive uneven amounts of water.
It is important to remember that there are city water restrictions in effect. Due to these regulations, your lawn will greatly suffer in sunny areas. Simply watering once per week is not enough in sandy soil unless we are getting weekly rain. Saint Augustine and Zoysia grasses prefer to be watered very deeply and infrequently.
If you are going to follow city regulations and water only once per week, be sure to water very deeply. You can do this by watering every zone 1/2 inch, then after the last zone finishes, restart from zone one, going through all zones again and watering every zone 1/2 inch. Do this until every zone has 2 to 3 inches of irrigation.
You can use this method if your lawn’s soil is void of water and needs to be rehydrated. This method helps the sandy, compacted soil to absorb water slowly, as over time, our soil has become bound up, making it hard for water to absorb.
If you do not rehydrate your lawn after it becomes drought-stressed with the methods listed above, when you go to water your lawn the next time, most of the water will evaporate before the next afternoon.
In order for lawn chemicals to work correctly, you want to make sure your lawn is well-irrigated the night before treatment. If we are in drought conditions and are not receiving rain, you will want to water 1 inch 3-4 times per week in sunlight and 1/2 inch 2-3 times per week in shade.
If you do not have a measuring device, it takes most rotors 90 minutes to put out 1 inch of water. It takes pop-ups around 30-60 minutes to reach one inch, depending on coverage from head to head and the number of heads in that zone.
Depending on the type of irrigation system you have and how the zones are configured, every irrigation system needs to be adjusted differently due to sun and shade. Not every area in the soil is the same.
The best way to determine how long you need to water a zone is to use my supplied watering gauges to record the amount of water in inches that zone receives and set it to the amount of time needed to reach 0.5, 0.75, or 1 inch of water for that zone. You do not want to water again until the soil slightly dries up so the roots can grow down, looking for water.
Remember, short frequent watering will lead to short roots, weeds, insects, and eventually dead grass. Nothing will make a difference if your irrigation system is not up to par. Sadly, if you can’t pay a bit more during the summer for water, plan on your turf having brown spots and problems.
I hope all this information helps as we both work together towards a healthy, beautiful lawn
During the summer, you should water areas in the sun 3-4 times per week, while watering shaded areas only 2-3 times per week. Due to the position of the sun throughout the year and soil evaporation rates, you may need to adjust the number of watering days.
Because of the sandy soil, you must water deeply and early in the morning so that the irrigation does not evaporate from the soil by mid-afternoon the same day. Please try to water between 2 and 8 AM. Depending on the number of irrigation heads used per zone, watering times will vary. Please see the chart below:
1 rotor per zone
2 rotors per zone
3 rotors per zone
4 rotors per zone
5 rotors per zone
Pop-ups
It’s not often you will find one pop-up sprinkler by itself, but it does happen.
1 pop-up per zone
2-10 pop-ups per zone
These times are approximations, as using an irrigation gauge is the best option for optimal turf watering.
